Hello! My name is Courtney and I am a birth assistant, birth doula and childbirth educator. As a young girl, when my parents would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I’d always answer “I don’t really know but... take care of pregnant women!” The idea of pregnancy and childbirth was always miraculous to me, so I set out as a pre-med student with plans to become an OBGYN. Shortly into my first semester of my freshman year of college, I was invited to attend my friend’s home birth. 70 long hours later, I watched her welcome her baby into her own hands in her own home in her own bathtub. I was sold.

I quickly began attending births with an experienced doula local to my college apartment and collected as much knowledge from her as my brain could muster while also finishing my undergraduate degree, and then gained my certification from International Childbirth Education Association to both teach childbirth education and attend births as a doula.

Armed with my fresh B.S. in Neuroscience and an official doula certification, I began teaching childbirth education at local hospitals and being invited into women’s birthing space. I quickly learned the value of patience and trust in our innate ability to give birth- seeing time and time again women follow their instincts to bring their children earth side. I was and still am reminded of my own strength as a woman and now as a mother myself.

As I continued to hold space in many different birthing experiences, I learned I had a keen interest for the clinical side of things in addition to my supportive role as a doula. I began shadowing different birth assistants, nurses, and midwives to help improve my skill set as clinical support at labors and was soon graciously offered a job with a local home birth midwifery practice. From the recommendation of a great mentor, Casey and I found each other and the continuing love story has written itself.

It is an honor and privilege to work alongside Casey and Dominique, and I am eternally grateful to be welcomed into your home and birthing space to bear witness to your strength. I still hear my very first doula-mentor in my head each and every time I’m helping a baby into the world. You are truly getting a collection of some of the most astounding women I’ve had the privilege to learn from all of these years. Thank you for considering Safe Haven Midwifery for your birth team, and in that all of the women who’ve come before us.
